Er is geen eenduidig antwoord te vinden op de vraag wat het publiek vindt van het stoppen van ‘The Idol’.
De serie, van de hand van The Weeknd, is door HBO na het eerste seizoen aan de kant gezet. “‘The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season,” luidt de verklaring.
Op social media verschenen reacties na dit nieuws, en die zijn niet voor de poes. Er zijn gemixte gevoelens over het stoppen van de serie. Enerzijds is te lezen dat iemand nog nooit zo’n slechte serie heeft gezien, anderzijds was het een genot om naar te kijken. Maar de meeste reacties gaan over de bijdrage van The Weeknd: “if u take the weeknd out the idol everything else was pretty good imo🤷♂️”
De serie heeft een turbulent seizoen achter de rug. Er waren een aantal afleveringen waar behoorlijk wat kritiek op kwam. Zo werd er eerder een acteur vervangen “to align the series more closely with network standards”. Ook kwam er kritiek op een aflevering met een nogal controversiële sex scene. “It’s meant to evoke discomfort,” moest The Weeknd zich toen verdedigen.
‘The Idol’ had gemiddeld 7 miljoen kijkers over de hele wereld.
